An assailant fatally shot  three students and injured five others on the  Michigan State University campus Monday night before  shooting himself, police said.

Brian Fraser, a sophomore from Grosse Pointe, Michigan, and Alexandria Verner, a student from Clawson, Michigan, were among those killed inside the school buildings, police said Tuesday. 

 

The name of the third victim was not released out of respect for the family's wishes, campus police said.Five students have been hospitalized in critical condition since Tuesday morning. 

 

43-year-old  Anthony Dwayne McRae was found dead off  campus in East Lansing, Michigan from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. 


The investigation is ongoing, and as of Tuesday morning, "police have absolutely no idea what the motive was," said Chris Rozman, MSU acting deputy police chief. 

 

- The suspect left a threatening note at two New Jersey public schools, police say the suspect 

acted alone and was not affiliated with the university, Rozman said.Police issued a search warrant at the suspect's home on  Tuesday morning. 

 

The attacker initially fled  on foot. Police located McRae about three hours later with a tip from a local resident. It appears he committed suicide after a confrontation with local law enforcement. 

 

Tuesday morning, police in Ewing, N.J., released a statement  that investigators  discovered a note in McRae's pocket that contained a threat against two  public schools in Ewing. MSU police later confirmed  they found a note on the suspect but refused to release its contents. 

 

Ewing Police said McRae has local connections to the town, which is about 670 miles southeast of East Lansing by car. 

public schools in Ewing were closed  Tuesday as a precaution, the local superintendent said in a statement.Classes are scheduled to resume on Wednesday.

The shooting started at around 8:18 p.m. ET  Monday at Berkey Hall,  home of the College of Social Sciences. When officers arrived, they found the bodies of two students.

 

Shortly thereafter, another shooting was reported  at the MSU student union, which is located next door and is a  student hangout. A student died there – said Rozman. Berkey Hall and the student union building are open to the public during business hours, police said. 

Hundreds of officers from various agencies responded to the scene, police said. The victims were taken to Sparrow Hospital in Lansing

As of Tuesday morning, they were still in critical condition, with four requiring surgery, Dr. Denny Martin, Assistant Medical Director at Sparrow Hospital. 

 

Police confirmed  Tuesday morning that all of the victims of the shooting  were college students. 

until 10:15 p.mET, police said Berkey and other buildings were secured and the shelter alert lifted  Tuesday morning. 

 

 All on-campus activities, including  in-person and virtual classes and sporting events, have been canceled for at least 48 hours. The school offers advisory resources for students and staff. 


- In 2023 there were more mass shootings than days. 

According to  Gun Violence Archive, an independent data collection organization, Monday's shooting is the 67th shooting in 2023.

The group defines a mass shooting as an incident in which four or more people are shot or killed, not including the gunman.According to the group, there were nearly 650 mass shootings nationwide in 2022.

At least one student who took refuge on the MSU campus Tuesday survived the Oxford High School shooting  in a nearby city in November 2021, according to local reports.

 

“As a representative from Oxford, Michigan, I can't believe I'm back here  15 months later. I'm angry that we have to hold another press conference to talk about children being killed in their schools," Slotkin said.

 "We are saddened by the loss of life and  want to hug every family affected by this tragedy" , she said .
