Two US survivors kidnapped at gunpoint in Matamoros, Mexico last week are being treated at US hospitals. 

Two of her friends, who were also kidnapped, died in the accident. 

A man identified  as 24-year-old José "N", from Tamaulipas, was arrested. 


Latavia Washington McGee is recovering in hospital with no injuries while Eric Williams is undergoing surgery at a Texas hospital  for three gunshot wounds to his leg.

Michelle Williams said the news that her husband was alive was a relief for her and her 11-year-old son, she told local ABC affiliate WBTW.

"My heart breaks for the other two families who can't say the same thing," she said. 

Shaeed Woodard and Zindell Brown were killed after unidentified gunmen opened fire as a group of four drove a white pickup truck March 3  through Matamoros, a town of 500,000 and just 1,000 residents across the border from the Texas city of Brownsville. 

A 33-year-old Mexican woman believed to have been a passer-by a block away died in Friday's accident. 


The group traveled from South Carolina and crossed the border into Mexico because Ms. McGee had an appointment for a tummy tuck, plastic surgery  to remove abdominal fat, her relatives said.

Ms Williams said her husband Eric Williams was touched when he spoke to her on the phone because he  considered Brown and Woodard  his "brothers". 

Mrs. McGee was also emotional, crying on the phone with her mother, Barbara Burgess, who told local CNN affiliate WPDE that her daughter "saw two of them die"; right in front of her. 

Video footage of the kidnapping shows  four Americans being loaded onto a  truck by heavily armed men. One is dragged into the vehicle while the others appear  unconscious and are dragged into the truck.Investigators believe the Gulf Cartel, one of Mexico's oldest organized crime groups, was responsible for the attack.

Matamoros is in the state of Tamaulipas, one of six Mexican states  the US State Department advises travelers against for "crimes and kidnapping."
